Theme: The Future of Urban Studies: The China Perspective

Venue: Conference Room of Old Library,Shanghai Jiao Tong University Xuhui Campus, Huashan Road No. 1954, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China 

Purposes 

To stimulate deep discussions on the future trends of urban studies from the China perspective. Summarize what urban China studies have achieved, locate the main research gaps, identify key research questions that would emerge in the next few decades, and discuss how the current research approaches should be adjusted to meet the needs of new research questions.

Form 

The discussions will be conducted mainly through Q & A. The two moderators will prepare a list of questions to the panelists about three weeks in advance of the debate, and the list of questions will bead justed according to the panelist’ research background and exposures to urban China research. The debate will start by the moderators asking panelists to answer the prepared questions but whenever there are disagreements on answers of same question, the moderate will ask the panelists to provide more elaborations and then the debate is proceeded. 

After all panelists have expressed their key points and the first-round debate come to reach some conclusions, the audiences will be allowed to ask questions. 

In the end, the moderators will try to summarize key consensuses that have been achieved in the debate as well as remaining disagreements for future discussions. 

The whole debate event will be videoed, and the edited video will be uploaded on the internet for open access.
